| On Wednesday, August 1, the Union Fire Company No. 1 was asked to attend a session of the Oxford Public Library's Summer Reading Program. The theme of this year's program was 'Get A Clue.' To start off, the speakers are put behind a curtain and the kids had to guess what field they were in by asking twenty questions about what they do for the community. Other guests have ranged from the Oxford Borough Police Department to track stars and now the fire department.
At 1100 hours, the first group was brought in and asked their questions and was able to guess who was hiding behind the curtain. After three guesses, firefighter was said and Firefighter Matt Groseclose came out in full turnout gear to give a talk about what firefighters do, how to prevent fires, and what to do in case of an emergency.
Then at 1300 hours, another group was brought into the room and was able to 'get a clue' about the world of firefighting. This time, Firefighter Brian Neubauer joined in to speak about firefighting and share his knowledge of the service. Approximately thirty-five kids were on hand for both sessions and were able to get an idea of what firefighters do.
The Union Fire Company No. 1 would like to thank those involved with educating the community about the importance of fire prevention and reminds everyone that smoke detectors save lives. |
