| The Union Fire Company No. 1 is on the verge of taking delivery of their newest Engine. This past week, the Engine Committee and the Fire Company President traveled to Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, Wisconsin to inspect the Engine as the final touches were being applied.
President Bob Prettyman, Sr., Deputy Chief Sam Terry (Co-Chair), Assistant Chief Mark Vining (Co-Chair), Captain Brian Kelley, Lieutenant Bob Prettyman, Jr., Chief Engineer Donald Slauch, Assistant Engineer Bill "Bucket" Goodley, and Firefighter First Class Bobby Stewart made the trip and met up with Glick Fire Equipment Salesman Curt "Hen" Woerth.
The members left Station at 1630 hours on Wednesday March 14th and were shuttled to the Philadelphia International Airport. The flight departed at 1935 hours for Milwaukee. After an hour layover, the crew was back on a plane bound Appleton. They arrived at the hotel around 2300 hours.
Thursday morning the crew was at the Pierce plant by 0730 hours. Once again, the Engine was no where to be found. Within a few minutes and quick phone call, the new Engine 21-2 made it's way onto the "Blue Floor".
The crew spent the rest of the day going over the entire rig and the specifications to insure that everything was completed properly. The committee was very pleased to find that under 20 items were found to be in need of some work by the staff at Pierce.
On Friday morning, the crew got back to Pierce to find that the work had begun on the engine to fix the noted issues. While the engine was being worked on, Chairman Terry and President Prettyman were taken into the corperate offices to sign the final papers and make the final payment.
Later in the afternoon, the crew learned that due to the winter disaster that was happening back in Pennsylvania had cancelled their flights home. They were put up for another night at the hotel.
After numerous delay and even some unbelievable airline actions, everyone had returned safely by Saturday night.
Engine 21-2 is scheduled to leave Wisconsin on Monday March 19th and is due to arrive at Glick's Fire Equipment on Wednesday. The new Engine will be picked up by the committee and brought to it's new home that Friday and the members will have the weekend to become familiar with it before it is returned to Glick's for some equipment instalation. |
