| Cecil County Box 401
At 0033 hours, the Union Fire Company No. 1 was alerted for Tanker 21 to assist the North East Fire Company (Station 4) on a large working Trash Fire at the Cecil County Landfill in the 700 block of East Old Philadelphia Road in North East, Maryland.
Tanker 21 responded in just 3 minutes with Engine 21-4, with a crew of 5, just minutes behind.
The large column of smoke and orange glow in the sky was visible to the responding units just south of Calvert about 8 miles north of the scene.
Once on the scene, Tanker 21 was set up and utilized as a Nurse Tanker during the Tanker Shuttle Operations. All Engines that were shuttling water to the scene dumped their tanks into Tanker 21, while the other Tankers dumped their tanks into the nearby folding portable tanks.
Engine 21-4 arrived and the crew was sent into the scene with hand tools and SCBA. Command 4 then requested Engine 21-4 and the crew to proceed to the top of the hill above the fire and place the Deck Gun into service.
Due to the large scale incident and the fact that all area Tankers were committed to the fire, Tanker 36 (Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company of Unionville, PA) was dispatched to transfer to the 21 House.
Just after arriving in Oxford, Command 4 requested additional Tankers to the scene. This brought Tanker 36, Tanker 22 (West Grove) from their fill-in assignment in Elkton, Tanker 5-13 (Robert Fulton) from their fill-in assignment in Rising Sun, and Engine 27-5 (Cochranville) to the scene.
Engine 21-4 flowed the Deck Gun for over 2 hours until the fire was placed under control just after 0400 hours. The additional Tankers were utilized to supply the water for the Deck Gun operation.
Engine 21-4 was the final 21 unit to clear the scene and return to service at 0443 hours.
Lancaster County Tanker 5-2-2 (Christiana) handled the fill-in assignment at the 21 House for the duration of the incident.
