By Union Firemen
July 21, 2020

While members were drilling on ground ladders in the sweltering heat on Monday evening, July 20, the Union Fire Company No. 1 and surrounding companies were alerted for a house on fire in the 1400 block of Little Elk Creek Road in East Nottingham Township. Engines 21-1, 21-2, 21-4, Ladder 21, Tanker 21, and all three Chief Officers immediately made the response. Upon arrival, Chief 21 and Engine 21-1 found a two story log cabin with smoke evident from the roof. Due to the lack of hydrants in the area, Engine 21-1 laid a supply line from the end of the driveway in preparation for a rural water supply operation. An attack line was stretched and crews from Engine 21-1 and Ladder 21 investigated a smoke condition in the home, finding a small fire in a second floor bathroom which was quickly controlled.

The incident was placed under control and held to the 21 units. One firefighter was transported to a hospital and was released later in the evening. No civilians were injured. All units were back in service prior to 22:00 hours.

Congrats are in order for Past Fire Chief Obenchain on (finally) operating the Ladder Truck at a fire, as well as Fireman Dave McCormick for operating our new Engine 1 at a fire for the first time.

Mutual Aid: West Grove Fire Company, Community Fire Company of Rising Sun, Cochranville Fire Company.
