Box 2102

At 1519 hours, the Union Fire Company No. 1 was alerted, along with units from Cochranville (27) and West Grove (22), for a reported house on fire in the 500 block of Union School Road in Lower Oxford Township. The caller reported a fire on the rear deck of the house.

Chief 21 (Prettyman) responded and, with a visible column of smoke in the distance, requested the Working Fire Dispatch. This alerted for an additional Engine from West Grove (22), the Rescue and Truck from Quarryville (57) and Medic 94 (SCCEMS). Within a few minutes, Chief 21 arrived finding a 2-story log cabin 50% involved in fire. He established the "Union School Road Command" and requested the first alarm Tanker Task Force. This alerted a full company response from Bart Township (51) and Tankers from Cochranville (27), West Grove (22), Quarryville (57), and Rising Sun (8).

Engine 21-1 (FF Nelson) arrived and laid 800' of 5" supply line up the driveway. The crew stretched two 1.75" hand lines and began to attack the fire from the exterior.

Tanker 21 was setup at the end of the driveway as the Nurse Tanker, with arriving Tankers dumping into it and then being supplied to the scene by Engine 27-1. Once the supply line was charged, the Deck Pipe on Engine 21-1 was used to knock down a majority of the fire from the front side of the house.

Engine 21-4 established a draft site at the creek on Cream Road and filled Tankers throughout the incident.

Additional arriving apparatus staged along Union School Road and sent their crews into the scene. All crews had to walk the driveway, uphill, carrying tools, saws, and ladders.

Crews worked for several hours using multiple hand lines and tools to open up the house to ensure that all of the fire was out.

EMS units on the scene performed Rehab and passed out water to all of the firefighters.

The Chester County Fire Marshals Office is investigating the incident.

Engine 25-1 (Longwood) and Tanker 24 (Kennett Square) transferred to our Mid-Town Station to cover the area.

1 firefighter from the Quarryville Fire Company was transported from the scene by Ambulance 21-1 and Medic 94 due to a medical emergency. Our thoughts are with him on a speedy recovery.

The final units were clear of the incident at 2002 hours.

Each fire company has a primary response area. This is considered their "first due" area.
