EMS Personnel Receive Awards

This evening, at the 12th annual EMS Awards Ceremony, EMS personnel from across Chester County gathered at the Red Clay Room in Kennett Square to honor over 100 EMS providers, 911 dispatchers and citizens that in one way or another helped save a life in the county.

Several people from the Union Fire Company No. 1 received Clinical Save Commendations. These awards are presented to a member or employee of an emergency services community who was involved in a pre-hospital clinical save of a patient who was initially pulseless and apneic; ALS and or BLS interventions or treatments were rendered and the patient was discharged from the hospital without significant neurological impairment.

On May 26th 2015, Nicholas Sawyers (EMS Manager) and Vietta Wood (Career EMS) responded to a call on the Route 1 Bypass where they found a vehicle off the roadway in the median. Inside the vehicle was a male patient suffering from cardiac arrest. They immediately began CPR and transport the patient to an area hospital with the assistance of Southern Chester County Medic 94 Paramedic Donald Keith.

On December 16th 2015, a female patient suffered a cardiac arrest at the Oxford Senior Center on E. Locust Street. Prior to the arrival of EMS, employees Colleen Owens and Laurie Nelson with the assistance of senior center volunteer Bonnie Smith began CPR on the patient and was able to use a defibrillator to administer shocks to the patient. With the arrival of the ambulance; Vietta Wood (Career EMS), Blaine Halsey (Career EMS) and Joshua Lowery (Career EMS) took over CPR and care of the patient. Paramedics Alex Christ and Kimberly Harvey from Southern Chester County Medic 94 also assisted and transported the patient to an area hospital.

On January 24th 2016, after a large snow storm Union Fire Company No. 1 was called to the Ox Haven Apartment Complex for a male in cardiac arrest. Michael Sells (Career EMS) and Blaine Halsey (Career EMS) arrived on the scene and immediately began CPR. Paramedics John Ryan and Tammy King Whiteman from Southern Chester County Medic 94 assisted at the scene and the patient was transported to an area hospital.

On January 28th 2016, Charles Foy Jr. (Career EMS), Danielle Hughes (Career EMS), Samuel Terry (Career EMS) and Allen Wood Jr. (Career EMS) were treating a male patient on New Street when he suffered a cardiac arrest in front of them. CPR was immediately started. Paramedic Tammy King Whiteman from Southern Chester County Medic 94 assisted at the scene and the patient was transported to an area hospital.
