On Sunday evening, calls came in to the Chester County 911 Center for a Barn Fire on Newark Rd. The address was determined to be in the 3000 Block of Newark Rd, putting it in the First Due of the Union Fire Company No. 1. The West Grove Fire Company, Cochranville Fire Company and Cecil Rescue 8 were also dispatched. Units from Station 23 (Avondale) also made the response, after being alerted when the fire was originally thought to be in Penn Township.

Chief 21 arrived with a working fire and ordered the first engine to hit the hydrant at Grist Mill Lane and Newark Rd. An outbuilding was also involved at this point, with exposure to another outbuilding and the house.

Engine 21-1 arrived as the First Due Engine and laid a supply line in the driveway from the hydrant. The crew led off with the Wagon Pipe and the 2.5 inch line off the rear. As additional crews arrived on scene, a total of 5 handlines were placed in service to contain the large volume of fire.

Ladder 21 arrived and made access to the far corner of the barn to begin using the Ladder Pipe, and were supplied by Engine 21-1. The Ladder was later repositioned to continue flowing in other locations.

West Grove Engine 22-3 took position in a lower driveway and deployed 2 additional handlines to fight the fire from that area. Engine 21-2 and Engine 23-2 also laid additional supply lines to a hydrant further up Newark Rd. to ensure sufficient water supply.

Due to the efforts of crews on scene, the House and exposure outbuilding were saved.

As the 21 units were finishing up at the scene, West Grove, Oxford, Cochranville and Avondale were alerted for a reported House Fire in West Grove Borough. Engine 21-2, Tanker 21, Engine 21-1 and Ladder 21 responded from the fire scene. Fortunately, that incident turned out to be minor and crews were able to finish cleaning up from the barn fire and get the apparatus ready for the next call.

Thank you to the Quarryville Fire Company (Lancaster Tanker 57) for standing by at Station 21 during the incident.
