Milk Tanker Crashes in East Nottingham

On Friday morning at 11:41 hours, the Union Fire Company No 1 and Medic 94 were alerted to Hickory Hill Rd (PA Route 472) North of Glendale Rd for a motor vehicle accident reported serious with a vehicle overturned. Chester County Fire Radio provided supplemental information to responding units that the caller indicating a milk tanker overturned carrying 52000 pounds of milk and that there was a large spill on-scene.

Ambulances 21-1 and 21-3 arrived simultaneously and reported a milk tanker upright partially blocking with 1 patient out of the vehicle. The ambulance crew along with Medic 94-2 began patient care.

Assistant 21 (Meadowcroft) arrived and performed a scene size up, confirming a one vehicle accident involving a milk tanker carrying approximately 6000 gallons of milk with an active leak and assumed the "Route 472 Command".

Rescue 21 (Greene) with six men made a quick response as Chauffer "Maverick" Hostetler and several other members had just returned from a fire prevention assignment. The Rescue crew arrived on the incident scene and the crew began scene stabilization and hazard control. The active leak from the tanker was determined to be from the tank lid due to the position and condition of the trailer. The crew utilized absorbent booms from the rescue, and constructed soil dams and diversions to control and contain the leaking milk. Additionally crews monitored a nearby stream to verify that the spilled milk would not reach the waterway. In total approximately 100 gallons of product leaked from the tanker.

Chester County Hazmat Chief 15 was requested by Command and made the response to the incident. Additionally all required regulatory authorities were notified of the spill, and the Oxford Area School District was notified due to the anticipated length of the closure. The trucking company arrived with 2 additional tankers and pumped the remaining product from the damaged tank.

At 14:13 the scene was turned over the Nulls Towing and Null’s Recovery & Site Restoration, who were contacted by the trucking company to handle the recovery, towing, and cleanup of spilled product.

Ambulance 21-3 transported one patients to a local trauma center.

Fire Police remained on scene until 15:48 hrs.
